Throughout civilization, nations have codified the basic and essential rights of their society —rights that all agree must not be infringed upon by the government or other individuals or entities. In the United States, our Bill of Rights enumerates our societies enlightened cherished and essential rights including life and liberty and freedom from harm.
There is however no bill of rights for our companion animals in America. Every year over 4 million companion animals in America are killed in our animal shelters. Why? because companion animals are legally labeled merely as “Things” in the eyes of the law.
CAR is about bringing the basic and essential rights of life and freedom from abuse, harm, and death to companion animals in America.
We know from science that companion animals are sentient beings as we are: they have feelings and emotions, have intelligence and feel pain and happiness, just as we do.
In the 21st century companion animals must not be labeled by lawyers as things. A car is a thing. A dog or cat is not an unfeeling, unintelligent lifeless thing. A companion animal is a sentient being just as you are.
Many countries around the world have changed their laws to treat companion animals with rights as sentient beings. America must get on board as well.
Get on board with us and help implement CAR – Companion Animal Rights.org as we work for legal personhood for companion animals, passing a National Companion Animal Rights Bill.
“I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Gandhi.
