HOW YOUR PET AGES

Free radicals cause altered gene expression and damage to our pets. This damage leads to oxidative stress and inflammation, which is associated with our pets aging and disease.

Fortunately, however, Mother Nature provides a very powerful weapon against this free radical aging process in the form of antioxidants. Simply put antioxidants neutralize the effect of free radicals and help to protect your pets heart, brain and other organs from oxidative stress.

If you pay attention to matters of health and aging, you’ve heard the term free radicals, which are unstable molecules that travel around the body looking to bond with stable molecules in order to steal an electron and stabilize themselves. When they are successful, they create new unstable molecules.

Free radicals are unavoidable because they’re produced during normal metabolic, cellular and immune system activity, as well as by external factors such as strenuous exercise, a poor diet, stress, pollution and even sunlight.

ANTIOXIDANTS TO THE RESCUE.

Antioxidants Provide Huge Health and Longevity Benefits for Pets. Antioxidants are molecules that gobble up toxic free radicals floating around in your pet’s body before they can harm healthy cells and tissue, thereby reducing oxidative stress and DNA damage.

Antioxidants play a key role in longevity, and high levels of circulating antioxidants are commonly seen in the “oldest old” among us. Several studies of older dogs have proved the benefits of an antioxidant-rich diet for canines.

Additionally, the results of a seven-year study of 90 kitties aged 7 to 17 who were fed an antioxidant-rich diet showed fewer decreases in lean muscle mass; improved body weight, lean body mass, skin thickness and red cell quality; decreased incidence of disease; general improvement in quality of life; and significantly longer life span.

The same is true for dogs. The more free radicals the body makes, the more antioxidants the body requires, and research shows puppies may have antioxidant deficiencies.

WHAT FOODS HAVE ANTIOXIDANTS.

Unfortunately, most commercially available pet foods, even those of very high-quality, contain synthetic vitamins and minerals that provide only minimal nutrition, not optimum nutrition.

Your dog’s or cat’s body is designed to absorb nutrients from fresh whole foods very efficiently.

Antioxidants are contained in the vitamins in fresh foods, including:

  • Vitamin A and carotenoids, which are found in bright colored fruits and veggies like apricots, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, peaches, squash, sweet potatoes and tomatoes
  • Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits and strawberries, as well as green peppers, broccoli and green leafy vegetables
  • Vitamin E, found in nuts, seeds and whole grains
  • Selenium, found in protein sources like fish, chicken, beef and eggs

Phytochemicals also contain antioxidant properties:

  • Flavonoids/polyphenols are in cranberries and tea
  • Lycopene is in tomatoes and watermelon
  • Lutein sources are dark green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and kale
  • Lignan is found in flax seed and certain other grains

I am not a Vet. While I have over 12 years’ experience rescuing, feeding and advocating for pets and have 4 rescues of my own I do not, and cannot advise anyone how to feed their pet. I can only share with you what I do to help my pets eat healthy, be healthy and live as long as possible. And that is this: I feed my pets quality dog food, and supplement it with fresh, whole living foods daily. Steven Monahan, Executive Director Founder Green Pets America Charities

Every time I turn around there is another warning of what not to feed our dogs

Every time I turn around there is another warning of what not to feed our dogs. Today there are just too many theories, opinions and little science. It’s getting to the point of not knowing what to take for granted, or what is good or bad for dogs to eat any longer. I think we just have to be very educated, hyper aware, use common sense, don’t give them something we would not eat ourselves and see how they react to foods and their environment.

Is this good or bad for me?

Warning Horse Meat Found Pet Food. Evangers Dog Food plans to recall all pet foods with beef for concerns over Pentobarbital in the food.

Joel Sher, VP of Evangers admitted to a reporter that DNA analysis found horse meat in their pet food. Independent testing results showed beef, as well as horse DNA.

Testing was ordered after a dog died and others sickened from complications caused by pentobarbital in their canned dog food. A drug typically used by veterinarians to euthanize animals.

The results are surprising considering the FDA also conducted species analysis testing on the implicated pet food and they confirmed it was beef. The FDA said in a statement:

In another admission on another website, Joel Sher also confessed that the company plans to recall all Evanger’s pet food products containing chunks of beef. The article states, all of the company’s foods containing “chunk beef” will be recalled.

It is unclear, at this point, which brands with beef or “chunks” of beef will be recalled. A search of Evanger’s website revealed it’s Hunk of Beef style pet food products are no longer sold on their website.

It is also unclear whether the reason for the pending recalls will be for adulteration with horse meat or fears that other brands may also contain pentobarbital or both.

This news that other Evanger’s brands are in the process of being recalled is not particularly surpising. The FDA could not confidently say whether other brands did not also contain the deadly drug.

This news comes on the heels of an FDA warning consumers not feed certain lots of Evanger’s pet food to their animals. The FDA press release cautioned: “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising pet owners and caretakers not to feed their pets certain lots of Evanger’s. Including canned Hunk of Beef or Against the Grain,Grain Free Pulled Beef with Gravy canned dog food. Unopened cans from both brands were found to contain pentobarbital, a barbiturate.

Green Pets: providing healthy pet food and critical veterinary care for pet families in need. Founded in Atlanta, GA in 2007. Gold Star Rated 501c3 Non-Profit Organization. Recognized by the State Senate of Georgia and City Council of Woodstock for our works to the State and Community.

The vision of Green Pets is in its name.  Pets are a precious resource to be sustained and not thrown away.  Green Pets believes pets are not disposable but rather a resource that needs to be rescued, renewed and rehomed.

Green Living Green PetsThe concept for Green Pets was based on Steve Monahan’s best-selling animal welfare book named, Rescue Renew Rehome.  It was written to teach pet owners and shelters how to organically and holistically feed and care for their family pets.

In the past 10 years, GPA have rescued, renewed and rehomed almost 1,000 death row shelter animals throughout Georgia.

Dog Food was given to places like Papas Pantry, Must Ministries, and The Cherokee Animal Shelter.  A need was filled by helping families keep their pets with them when the tough times hit.

Green Pets helped children needing service dog to help them live to the best of their abilities.

Green Pets is keenly aware a phenomenon called “Black Dog Syndrome”.  It’s a sad truth that leaves black dogs in shelters much longer than their tan furred brethren.  Just like certain breeds, dogs shouldn’t be judged on the color of their fur or their breed.

Green Pets is not your basic “rescue the dogs” nonprofit. They cover a lot of needs in their overarching vision of simply keeping families and pets together.

Green Pets helped honor our local working K9s by providing a fenced in area at the Woodstock police station for a K9 outdoor “break room”.  Our police K9 is on the job protecting us 24/7 and Green Pets America believes we all should love and celebrate these working officers, with the dignity, honor and respect they deserve.

Steve Monahan, Green Pets Founder, said; in our day to day efforts, we seek to fill the gaps that exist in providing the needed resources to keep families and their beloved pets together in hard times.

We listen to families and their individual needs.  It may be helping with funds to pay for routine veterinary care for a beloved pet. Or emergency care when a dog or cat is injured.  It even means providing resources for spay and neutering.

The State Senate of Georgia and City Council of Woodstock Georgia recognized Green Pets for their service to Georgia’s families and pets.

As Green Pets takes a moment to look back on the last 10 years, we look to the future and helping our surrounding area to “Live Green” with their pets.  Our Pets are so precious to us, as they give us unconditional love, we should all be giving them a chance to live healthy, happy and safe.
