Can You Feed Your Dog A Paleo Diet?

At green Pets we were wondering, Can You Feed Your Dog A Paleo Diet?

So we did some research. We read some new books and we read some articles. One book we particularly liked was Paleo Dog, by Jean Hofve, DVM and Celeste Yarnall, Phd. At green Pets we first research the Science. And this book is written by two well educated experts.

We learned as their book talks about is from the tiniest teacup poodle to the most massive Great Dane, dogs’ digestive systems are pure wolf. Fido’s ancestors enjoyed a diet that was 45 to 50 percent protein, 40 to 50 percent fat, and less than 10 percent carbohydrates.

But as they say, walk down the pet food aisle, however, and you’ll find that low cost dry food is made mainly of starchy ingredients like peas, potatoes, corn, wheat, rice, and oats-nothing a prehistoric pup would dream of eating. At green Pets we only carry the premium brands, high protein, low carb dry and can food.

In the book they say that 85 percent of dogs are overweight or obese, with cancer killing 42 percent of all dogs and half of dogs over the age of 10.

So how do you feed a wolf disguised as a pug? Paleo Dog – by Jean Hofve, DVM, and Celeste Yarnall, PhD – guides readers through an assessment of their dogs’ diets and helps them find the right balance of healthy ingredients.

In addition to recipes and nutrition info, the book offers advice on what treats are safe, training tips, the benefits of exercise, massage, and how to ensure dogs are receiving the love and attention they need.

At green Pets we read Paleo Dog and both enjoyed it. There is a lot of expertise and time needed to feed your dog raw food as in the Paleo Dog book, but if you want to go raw over dry, or can food, this is a must read.

ACANA 5 Stars

Acana contains excellent amounts of meat-based protein, fat-to-protein ratio of 75% or lower, a good ratio carbohydrate content, no controversial chemical preservatives, no strange meat ingredients, no artificial coloring agents, and no generic animal fats.Yes, it is pricey but the best is the best.

Here are recent reviews on Acana from Amazon purchasers.

My Irish Jack loves the lamb and apple formula. He often licks his bowl repeatedly after he’s finished, then looks up at me to give him more.

My dog loves this brands food. We mix it together with Costco brand dog food. Our dog will wait for us to pour in the Acana food before digging in. The food itself smells like healthy dog food–not like sour chemicals that you find in some dog food. The acana bits are filled with rich oils and you can definitely see the difference in quality.

Love this dog food! Have been using this dog food for our 2 dogs for 4+ years and wouldn’t feed them anything else. Grain free and great for their health! It was delivered in a timely manner.

My dog loves the Acana line. The lamb is her favorite!

Rachael Ray Nutrish 3.5 STARS

We like that the Nutrish formula contain meat, or meat products at the top of the ingredient list. Canines need a great deal of protein in their diets for optimum health. In addition it contains egg products and healthy vegetables to add additional protein, fiber and nutrients.

However, both the wet and dry versions contain some ingredients that offer little nutritional value for dogs. For example, brown rice is not necessarily bad for dogs, but it offers few vitamins, minerals or proteins. Overall, Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food is a 3.5 STAR review. However, adding in cost and value it is still better than average. Nutrish is less costly than high premium dog foods. So if you cannot afford the 5 STAR brands this is a good choice.

Is higher cost dog food really worth it?

At Meals Fur Pets we are asked on a regular basis, is higher cost dog food really worth it?

There is a huge variety of foods on the market, each promising something different. “Complete and Balanced Nutrition”; “Beautiful and Shiny Coat”; “Extra Support for Healthy Joints”. The guarantees are endless, but do these food companies deliver what they say they will? If you are buying the cheap brands from the grocery store, they definitely do not. Inside the bag or can are fillers, chemicals, and junk with no nutritional value. Is there an alternative for feeding your sweet Pittie?

Yes, and it’s sold in pet specialty stores. Premium pet food has ingredient lists which are full of things you can actually pronounce: beef, carrots, apples, flaxseed, etc. Many manufacturers of these foods use components safe for humans to eat. Some are even organically grown. Better ingredients mean more nutritionally solid pet food. More nutritious food means you don’t have to feed as much as the inferior food for your dog to be satisfied. This also means you will have less waste to pick up on your potty walks. That’s because your Pit will be using more of the food to fuel her body.

Better food isn’t just about a difference in purchase price. You will also notice results when visiting the vet. Since nutrition is the foundation of a healthy dog, your beautiful DOG will thrive while eating food that’s good for her. A healthy dog means less need to visit the vet for illness.
