Why We Love Our Pets Video

Why We Love Our Pets Video. I’ve been in animal welfare for over twelve years now. After surviving a terminal illness I left the fast charging corporate world, never regretting that life changing decision. Twenty-five years in a stressful career almost killed me and the near death experience woke me up. It taught me what is important and lasting and what is not. What is lasting is living simply in the present moment. Living in the present moment, not fretting about the future or regretting mistakes of the past is something rescued dogs taught me as well.

The dying experience was brutal, but It taught me what is important and lasting in this life, and what is not. What is lasting is living simply in the present moment. Living in the present moment, not fretting about the future or regretting mistakes of the past is something rescued death row dogs taught me as well.

After leaving the corporate grind I started a non-profit focused on rescuing and finding permanent loving homes for death row dogs. It seemed the fitting thing. Given a rare second chance at a happy, fulfilling life for myself I wanted to give death row dogs a second chance as well.

Death row dogs taught me more about living a life without worry or regret than 20 years of corporate business ever did. Death row dogs taught me much, and teach me lessons to this day.  The three primary life lessons I experienced being with rescued dogs are these.

Giving and accepting unconditional love. Not the kind of love we humans most times give, where if you love me, I will love you. Or, if you provide things for me I will love you. No, dogs give us love not for any benefit, but just because they love us. That is truly un-conditional love.

Second dogs teach us to live in the moment. After we rescue them from death row they walk out the door and forget their past problems and show only happiness. They don’t blame the owners that abandoned them or have a woe is me attitude as we humans would. No, they move on, prance about and do their happy dance of freedom. They immediately enjoy life as nothing ever happened.

And, that takes us to the third lesson I learned from death row dogs. They always live in the moment. They are happy right now. They don’t look to be happy in the future but are happy right now in the present. Dogs do not live in their heads as we humans do. Because of that, they experience life so much clearer and fuller than we humans. Think about it. If you did not think about the past every day. Or did not worry and fear the future every day how would you feel? And how much mental time would you have to live right now, right here in the moment?

We say dogs are not as smart as humans because we have bigger brains. Well, I say that maybe our bigger brains that allow us to think every second do us more harm than good. Maybe a smaller brain as dogs have that allow them to live in the moment, not the past or future worrying, but happy right now might not be a bad thing?

If you do not have a dog I know this may sound a bit crazy to you. But, If you are lucky enough to have a dog in your life you probably will know the meaning of what I learned being with rescued dogs the past twelve years. The purest love a human will ever experience is the unconditional love of a dog.

How to Help Your Pet Live Longer

HOW YOUR PET AGES

Free radicals cause altered gene expression and damage to our pets. This damage leads to oxidative stress and inflammation, which is associated with our pets aging and disease.

Fortunately, however, Mother Nature provides a very powerful weapon against this free radical aging process in the form of antioxidants. Simply put antioxidants neutralize the effect of free radicals and help to protect your pets heart, brain and other organs from oxidative stress.

If you pay attention to matters of health and aging, you’ve heard the term free radicals, which are unstable molecules that travel around the body looking to bond with stable molecules in order to steal an electron and stabilize themselves. When they are successful, they create new unstable molecules.

Free radicals are unavoidable because they’re produced during normal metabolic, cellular and immune system activity, as well as by external factors such as strenuous exercise, a poor diet, stress, pollution and even sunlight.

ANTIOXIDANTS TO THE RESCUE.

Antioxidants Provide Huge Health and Longevity Benefits for Pets. Antioxidants are molecules that gobble up toxic free radicals floating around in your pet’s body before they can harm healthy cells and tissue, thereby reducing oxidative stress and DNA damage.

Antioxidants play a key role in longevity, and high levels of circulating antioxidants are commonly seen in the “oldest old” among us. Several studies of older dogs have proved the benefits of an antioxidant-rich diet for canines.

Additionally, the results of a seven-year study of 90 kitties aged 7 to 17 who were fed an antioxidant-rich diet showed fewer decreases in lean muscle mass; improved body weight, lean body mass, skin thickness and red cell quality; decreased incidence of disease; general improvement in quality of life; and significantly longer life span.

The same is true for dogs. The more free radicals the body makes, the more antioxidants the body requires, and research shows puppies may have antioxidant deficiencies.

WHAT FOODS HAVE ANTIOXIDANTS.

Unfortunately, most commercially available pet foods, even those of very high-quality, contain synthetic vitamins and minerals that provide only minimal nutrition, not optimum nutrition.

Your dog’s or cat’s body is designed to absorb nutrients from fresh whole foods very efficiently.

Antioxidants are contained in the vitamins in fresh foods, including:

  • Vitamin A and carotenoids, which are found in bright colored fruits and veggies like apricots, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, peaches, squash, sweet potatoes and tomatoes
  • Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits and strawberries, as well as green peppers, broccoli and green leafy vegetables
  • Vitamin E, found in nuts, seeds and whole grains
  • Selenium, found in protein sources like fish, chicken, beef and eggs

Phytochemicals also contain antioxidant properties:

  • Flavonoids/polyphenols are in cranberries and tea
  • Lycopene is in tomatoes and watermelon
  • Lutein sources are dark green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and kale
  • Lignan is found in flax seed and certain other grains

I am not a Vet. While I have over 12 years’ experience rescuing, feeding and advocating for pets and have 4 rescues of my own I do not, and cannot advise anyone how to feed their pet. I can only share with you what I do to help my pets eat healthy, be healthy and live as long as possible. And that is this: I feed my pets quality dog food, and supplement it with fresh, whole living foods daily. Steven Monahan, Executive Director Founder Green Pets America Charities

Animal Welfare Book Rescue Renew Rehome

Animal Welfare Book Rescue Renew Rehome 3rd edition just released.

Written by the founder of Green Pets America Charities, celebrating 10 years of caring for animals and families in need.

Animal welfare is about Compassion for animals.

COMPASSION

Compassion: To suffer together.  It’s the feeling that arises when we are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.

Compassion is not the same as empathy, though the concepts are related. While empathy refers to our ability to take the perspective of and feel the emotions of another person, compassion is when those feelings and thoughts include the desire to help.

Neuroscience has shown that when we feel compassion, our heart rate slows down, we secrete the bonding hormone oxytocin, and regions of the brain linked to empathy, caregiving, and feelings of pleasure light up: resulting  in our desire to approach and care for other’s.
